Restoration log: the 1943 scan
The print scan of The Spider and the Tulip came to us with the frame line drifting across the image every few seconds, a sign of a scanner that was not registered properly. We stabilised it against the sprocket holes, which are visible in the raw scan, and re-cropped.
The soundtrack was the harder part. The optical track had been read with the wrong slit width and everything above about six kilohertz was mush. The laserdisc-to-tape copy has better audio, so the published scan uses the picture from the scan and the sound from the tape, aligned by hand.
